ChatGPT Ads Hits $1B: What Small Businesses Should Know

OpenAI announced this morning that ChatGPT Ads has hit a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate — in under 200 days since launch. Alongside the milestone, the platform opened self-service buying through Ads Manager across India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, bringing ChatGPT Ads to over 40 countries.

The number that should actually get a small business owner’s attention isn’t the billion. It’s this: since Ads Manager opened in May, small and medium-sized businesses have become “a material share” of the ads business. OpenAI is explicitly courting you now, with CPC bidding, outcome-optimized campaigns, and product feeds that look a lot like the tools you already use on Meta and Google.

Here’s what changed, and whether it’s worth your budget yet.

What ChatGPT Ads Actually Is

People come to ChatGPT with intent — choosing software, planning a renovation, comparing services. They describe what they want, their constraints, and ChatGPT helps them narrow the decision. Ads appear in that conversation context: clearly labeled, separate from the answers, matched to what someone is exploring at that moment (and, where the user has enabled it, their broader interests).

OpenAI says advertising never influences ChatGPT’s answers, advertisers can’t see private conversations, and users control personalization. That last part matters if you’ve been nervous about the trust question — the whole platform is built around not torching the 1 billion weekly users who make ChatGPT valuable in the first place.

Why This Isn’t Just Another Ad Platform

Google captures demand at the moment of search. Meta interrupts people mid-scroll. ChatGPT Ads inserts itself one step earlier — while someone is still framing the decision, before they’ve seen a single competitor’s landing page.

For service businesses, that’s the most valuable moment in the funnel. Somebody typing “help me pick a CRM for a 4-person real estate team” into ChatGPT is a warmer lead than almost anything you can buy elsewhere.

The early results OpenAI shared are directionally interesting: one ecommerce advertiser saw 3x return on ad spend over 28 days, and a technology partner reported more than 80% of ad-driven traffic came from new customers. Small sample, vendor-reported — but the new-customer number is the one that matters if your growth problem is reach, not conversion.

What SMBs Get Today

  • Self-service buying through Ads Manager — no managed-sales team or agency gate required anymore
  • CPC and outcome-optimized bidding — now the majority of campaigns on the platform
  • Pixel and Conversions API for measurement, plus product feeds, geo targeting, and custom audiences
  • North American availability already live through the Ads Solutions team and partners; self-serve rollout continuing market by market

In other words: it’s no longer an experiment for enterprise brands. The plumbing a small business actually needs — tracking, bidding, targeting — exists now.

Should You Move Budget Today?

Our take: OpenAI has been consistently aggressive about winning small businesses, and the pricing pressure across the AI market means its ad inventory will stay competitive for a while. Cheap early clicks on high-intent traffic is exactly the kind of arbitrage that doesn’t last.

But context matters. Most small businesses are still early in AI adoption overall — nearly half of small employer firms now use AI somewhere in the business, and the ones reporting real ROI overwhelmingly started with operations, not media buying. If your follow-up, intake, or phone answering is still manual, fix that first — it’s a bigger lever than any new ad channel.

If your funnel is already solid, though, a small test budget on ChatGPT Ads is a reasonable bet this quarter:

  • Start with $20-50/day on your best-converting offer, not your brand campaign
  • Install the Pixel or Conversions API before launch — outcome bidding without conversion data is just donating money
  • Write for decision-stage questions — your creative should answer “which,” “how much,” and “is it worth it,” because that’s what the conversation around your ad is about
  • Compare against your cheapest current channel after 30 days, not 3

The Bigger Picture

A $1B run rate in 200 days means ChatGPT Ads is the fastest-ramping ad platform in recent memory. And it makes OpenAI’s strategy explicit: keep ChatGPT free for a billion users by monetizing the moments where they’re deciding what to buy.

For small businesses, the pattern is familiar from every platform shift — Google in the 2000s, Facebook in the 2010s. The businesses that tested early got the cheap traffic. The ones that waited paid retail.
